Confessions of a Shopaholic- Kyra Loew

Kyra Loew
Period 8

  1. Becky is peppy and energetic but also possessive and naive. She doesn’t express much restraint in spending her money in order to own several clothes, shoes, and purses. Instead of facing her debt and debt collector, she avoids the situations and hides behind unreasonable excuses. Instead of facing her debt, she turns a blind eye and lets it grow until she eventually loses everything. Although Becky has a cheerful, bubbly personality, it makes her lack responsibility and restraint over her bills.

3.  Wants: (What she thinks she needs)

  • Designer clothes, dresses
  • Scarfs
  • New purses
  • Shoes
  • Wallets
  • Jewelry
  • Make-up

    Needs:

  • A home/shelter
  • Food
  • Running water
  • Electricity
  • Heat
  • Paid debt
  • Clothing and shoes (doesn’t need to be in excess or overpriced)
  • Money

5. The movie ends by exposing all the lies Becky was holding from her boss, best friend, family, and her long-avoided bill collector, Derek Smeath. Succumbing to the desire of shopping, Becky accumulated thousands of dollars of debt on her credit card. The movie ended with her being overwhelmed by all the unleashed conflicts of her dishonesty and possessiveness. However, all is quickly resolved when she finally resolves her debt and regains her integrity by selling all her beloved belongings. This is sealed when she decides to give up her green scarf to another girl at an auction. I felt the ending of the movie was rushed by placing all the conflicts at the end; as soon as she hit rock bottom, a solution followed right after. Instead of making Becky constantly run from her problems, it should include more of her struggle with her ‘addiction’, but that would probably take away from the humor. I feel Becky having trouble pulling away from the temptation of spending her money would be a more realistic ending.
